Allow yourself to be cast under the spell of this exceptional residence. This house is a true marvel, not only by its very rich history as by its exceptional restoration. It was built and inhabited in the 19th century by Cheong Fatt Tze, who was nicknamed the Eastern Rockefeller, but also the last Mandarin and first Chinese capitalist! More than anything, he wanted to preserve his heritage and share his love of culture and tradition through architecture. All its architecture is remarkably designed to preserve the intimacy of the family, while respecting the rules of Feng Chui and local climatic constraints.
If you’re wondering whether or not to stay here, do not hesitate! Indeed, to visit, you will be restricted to only the common parts of the house. However, by staying at the hotel, you will have access to the many courtyards, stairs and corridors that have an infinite charm!
This fabulous home owes its renaissance to a couple of enthusiasts who invested 20 years of their life, to its restoration in the rules of the art. Every detail has regained its original brilliance; no concession or easy solution has been used. For example, all the porcelain decorations that adorn its façade, ridge and transom, are part of a long and painstaking craftsmanship made of pieces of porcelain imported from China, as they originally were. The murals paintings “a tempera” are composed of pigments and egg yolk following the purest tradition.
The owners of the house hope and fight for this type of restoration to become a standard for the entire UNESCO-classified Penang site. Their work is unanimously recognized, including a UNESCO’s Most Excellent Project in the Asia Pacific Heritage Awards in 2000.
18 rooms with unique style and decoration, divided into 4 categories; Liang Collection, Ming Collection, with direct access to the swimming pool, Tang suites and Han suites.
The Indigo restaurant is absolutely delicious. The place is amazing and the menu extends far above and beyond other eateries in Penang. They also have a very good wine list. We recommend you book in advance to avoid disappointment.
The breakfast takes place in the main courtyard, which is the place where all the energy flows convert. You will discover all of this during your tour!
If you stay at the hotel, you will have a complementary tour of the house; I had the great chance to visit with the owner who passionately spoke about each and every element of this beautiful place.
Do not miss the boutique, which has a great selection of books, including a book about The Blue Mansion itself that the owner will personally sign for you!
