Udaipur – Colonial Atmosphere

Udaipur, The white city

Udaipur is a city of lakes, palaces and history. The Maharaja here takes on another name, Maharana, as its resistance to the invader puts it above the other chiefs of clan. This city was never colonized, unlike the rest of Rajasthan, neither by Muslims nor by English. The Maharana family comes directly from the sun, hence the different representations that you will see on the palaces.

The two must-haves of course are the city palace and a small tour on the lake at sunset (preferably one that stops on the island of Jagmandir). If you decide to stay in the Fateh Prakash Palace, you will have the best view on the Pichola lake and the Lake Palace Hotel (the one you can see in James Bond movie’s Octopussy!).

At sunset, you can have a tea or aperitif at The Sunset Terrace, one of the restaurant of the Fateh Prakash Palace.

Arround 7PM every day, you can attend a sound and light in English in the City Palace.

Our little secret

If you have some free time, go early in the morning to the Ghats, by the lake (to the right of the city palace when looking at the lake). You will see how the inhabitants begin their day; some wash their laundry, others simply wash themselves, some do their meditation session, feed fish or pigeons … in short a snapshot of local life!
